In 1997, The Marion Memorial Hospital and The Mullins Hospital merged and immediately thereafter, construction of the Marion County Medical Center was completed.
In 2010, the Marion County Medical Center along with the Mullins Nursing Center and Physician Practices was sold to Community Health Systems in Nashville, TN.
The $44,000,000 proceeds from this sale were used to develop the Marion County Healthcare Foundation. In July of 2010 the transition from hospital to foundation began taking place. In September 2010, the group purchased property at 230 South Main Street, Mullins, South Carolina and in October of 2010, renovations to the building began.
By February of 2011, renovations were complete for the staff to move in. Officially founded in 2010, the Marion County Healthcare Foundation is a non-profit exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes, and social welfare of the community.
This includes such purposes as making grants to organizations which qualify as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. In 2012, the foundation was granted a 501 (c) (4) status.
