In 1997, The Marion Memorial Hospital and The Mullins Hospital merged and immediately thereafter, construction of the Marion County Medical Center was completed.
In 2010, the Marion County Medical Center along with the Mullins Nursing Center and Physician Practices were sold to Community Health Systems in Nashville, TN.
The $44,000,000 proceeds from this sale were used to create the Marion County Healthcare Foundation. In September of 2010, the group purchased property at 230 S. Main St. in Mullins South Carolina and in October renovations to the building began. By February of 2011, renovations were complete and ready for the staff to move in.
Officially formed in 2010, the Marion County Healthcare Foundation is a non-profit exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes, and social welfare of the community. In 2012 the foundation was granted a 501(c)(4) status by the IRS.
The foundations primary purpose is to issue grants to organizations which qualify as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.
